A few months back all the Peace Corps Volunteers in the Youth, Family and Community Development program met up for an in service training. On the first night we read a letter we wrote to our selves a year previous and the aspiration statesments we wrote over a year and a half ago. We were then asked to select one sentence from either document to share with the group. The following is the poem our selections make.
Enjoy!!!
First Year Reflections
Wisdom from PCDR YFCD 10-02
I’m expecting it to be a constant dance between needing to find ways to feel rooted in where I’m coming from and taking steps into the new culture in ways that will allow me to assimilate without losing a sense of myself.
The projects, classes, successes, failures, and everyday moments were perfect/meant to happen because it means you were active.
Discipline…makes what you know and believe – become what you do.
Your life is awesome right now.
Mostly I just hope that people start showing up for the things I do…Also, you made it through your first year as a Peace Corps volunteer and that’s fucking AWESOME.
I hope to have more confidence in my abilities.
Give yourself a hug. No, seriously.
The greatest thing a person can do is be true to yourself.
Take time to just BE. Listen, observe and really be kind.
“All the things you know now”—-and I have no idea!
From my letter to myself – Recuerde vivir en el presente, de agradecer a cada momento…esta vida es corta y esta experiencia bueno, ya tu sabes.
I truly believe integration will be one of my strongest assets to creating a harmonious work environment ensuring lasting change.
Look at how far you’ve come!
God doesn’t make junk. I’m/we’re loveable.
Oh the places you’ll….whoa.
Prophetic.
Remember that where we are now was once only but a hope and a dream.
Share, laugh, listen and love; especially yourself, you chose this path.
Limbo Limbo Limbo! (How low can you go…).
Mami was a pain in the ass and I didn’t know she sucked so bad at Reading. Hindolo is taking care of her, though.
Gratitude Love Strong Sense of accomplishment.
I said all the right things but had no idea what I was talking about.
